The Mitropoli Church of Aegina is not only one of the island’s most important religious landmarks, but also a place deeply connected to modern Greek history. Built during the early years of the newly established Greek state, the church stands as a symbol of faith, unity, and national rebirth. Its architecture reflects the simplicity and spiritual strength of the era, offering a serene and dignified setting for an Orthodox wedding ceremony.

Aegina itself holds a unique place in Greek history as the first capital of modern Greece. After the Greek War of Independence, the island became the administrative center of the new nation, a role closely linked to Ioannis Kapodistrias, Greece’s first Governor. Kapodistrias envisioned Aegina as a place of renewal and stability, laying the foundations of education, governance, and national identity.

Choosing Mitropoli Church for their wedding allowed Julie and Nicola to exchange vows in a location where personal stories intertwine with collective memory. It is a place where history, tradition, and love meet — making their ceremony not only a celebration of their union, but also a quiet homage to the beginnings of modern Greece. Their day began in the heart of Aegina, at Mitropoli Church, where the ancient stones and stained glass framed one of the most meaningful moments of their lives. Surrounded by family and friends, Julie and Nicola exchanged vows in the deeply beautiful, age-old ritual of an Orthodox wedding. The emotion of the ceremony — reflected in the smiles, the soft candlelight, and the reverent atmosphere — set the tone for a day filled with love and connection that I was honored to capture.

Intimate Portraits at a Fishermen’s Harbor

Once the formalities concluded, we wandered to a small traditional fishermen’s harbor just minutes from the church. With the gentle summer breeze off the Saronic Gulf and the pastel hues of the fishing boats as our backdrop, Julie and Nicola shared some of their most intimate moments of the day. Here, the light dipped perfectly, and we captured portraits that feel as if they could belong to any classic film — this is the magic of Aegina’s coastal charm.

Celebration at Saliarelis Estate

As afternoon turned to evening, the celebration continued at Saliarelis Estate. The estate’s warm, open spaces and rustic elegance offered the perfect setting for laughter, dancing, and heartfelt speeches. Surrounded by twinkling lights and smiling faces, every photograph tells the story of joy — from the couple’s first dance to carefree moments on the terrace.
